Google has suspended one of Android’s biggest phone manufacturers, Huawei, from Android updates after the Trump administration barred the Chinese organization from trading with US companies.
The ban means that Google (or any other US company) can’t supply any technologies to the Chinese company without government approval first.
Other US companies including Intel Inc. are also cutting off their dealings with Huawei, effective immediately.
Huawei, which is the world’s second-largest seller of smartphones after Samsung, has long relied on Google’s Android operating system to run its smartphones and tablets.
Will this ban effects the existing Huawei users?
Well the answer is both Yes & No, Although the phone will won’t stop working, as Google promises that the Play Store (the app store) and Google Play services will continue to work on your Huawei smartphone (Engadget reports that this is still possible because it doesn’t require any interaction between Google and Huawei).
Which simply means that your current apps will continue to work & you can still able to install or update new/existing apps from Play Store.
But — You can use it all at your own risk, you are no longer able to receive any security update
Industry expert Tristan Rayner, senior editor with the Android Authority news website, said the block means security updates to Huawei phones from Google will stop, and that buying a Huawei phone is now a “real risk”.
“Whether it’s someone with a brand new Huawei P30 Pro, which was unveiled last month, or the owner of an older Huawei Mate device that’s a few years old, it’s now clear that their Android operating system will no longer receive important security updates.”
And will not be able to update to a newer version of the Android operating system if one becomes available.
Future Huawei smartphones won’t be able to include Google apps including YouTube, Gmail, and its Chrome web browser, as they are not included in the open source version of Android.
Many also fear that Microsoft will also follow the suit and block Windows 10 updates for Huawei laptops. As Google bowing to pressure from the US government, and Microsoft’s silence on the matter, makes people fear that they could see a similar ban for Huawei laptops as well.
